About Us

Shaping Europe’s mission is to empower young Europeans, amplifying their voices and providing a platform to actively contribute to the future of Europe. Our work primarily involves informative articles shared on our website, as well as in person activities such as workshops. 

Shaping Europe was founded in 2020, and is registered as a non-profit organisation in the Netherlands. Our operations are driven entirely by a passionate team of volunteers, currently numbering thirteen dedicated individuals.

Role overview

As an editor, your primary responsibility will be to craft informative articles on European topics, either in English or Dutch. Through your writing, you will actively contribute to discussions covering diverse policy areas. Your editorial insights will play a crucial role in shaping captivating narratives that resonate with a wide-ranging audience.

The editorial team convenes weekly to delve into various subjects concerning the European Union. During these meetings, editors present their concepts for new stories and articles. Collaborative opportunities, as well as interviews with politicians or key policy makers are encouraged. Once you’ve selected a topic, you’ll embark on the research and writing phase. Following this, the chief editor will assign another editor to review your article. Upon successful review, the article will proceed to publication. Alongside creating your own content, you’ll also engage in the important task of reviewing fellow editors’ articles.

Responsibilities 

• Write articles covering a range of EU-related subjects, including covering the European elections as part of our European Elections Project
• Review and edit articles to ensure clarity, coherence, and consistency.
• Fact-check and verify information to ensure accuracy and credibility.
• Contribute to editorial brainstorming sessions and content planning.

Qualifications

• Inspired to write articles on European policy and politics.
• Excellent writing skills in Dutch and/or English.
• Assertiveness to approach and work with experts (e.g. officials, politicians, and academics).
• Availability of six hours per week.

While most of our work is done remotely, we see value in coming together regularly to brainstorm, get to know each other, and have fun! We find it important that all of Shaping Europe’s volunteers can attend these gatherings, consequently we will only consider applicants that are based in the Netherlands (regardless of nationality). Alternatively, we offer positions for freelance volunteer editors who are based outside the Netherlands, who would commit to writing a few articles a year, without needing to attend in person meetings. 

Availability required is six hours per week.
